End 10-Match Skid With Wins In Final Three Sets
The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (6-12, 1-2) defeated Cal State Northridge 3-2 with a brilliant come from behind win on Saturday evening at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. After losing the first two sets 25-20 and 25-12, the Highlanders went on to win the next three 25-18, 25-17, and 15-5 to claim the victory and their first conference win of the season.
Down two sets to none and heading into the third, the Highlanders opened up an early 8-3 lead off a Matador error. Northridge (5-12, 0-4) crawled back to within three points, but UCR extended their lead to as high as eight points at 21-13 off a service ace by Amanda Nilsson (Torrance, CA) before finishing out the set.
UCR drew first blood in the fourth and never looked back. After opening with a 3-0 lead off an Amy Bush (Yucaipa, CA) kill, the Highlanders never faltered and won 25-17 to force a decisive fifth set. The momentum was certainly in the Highlander's court as they cruised to a 15-5 fifth set victory and their first conference game of the season. This win ties the Highlanders' win total from last season.
Dominique Cowling (Benicia, CA) again paced the Highlanders with 16 kills, a .394 attack percentage, and 10 digs. Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) added 14 kills and eight digs, while Kimberly McNeal (Carson, CA) and Amanda Nilsson had 14 and 13 digs respectively. Shannon Moyneur (Valley Center, CA) had a hand into 10 blocks, including two solos, while Kelly Simpson (Modesto, CA) recorded eight block assists.
UCR travels to Northern California next weekend for conference games against UC Davis on Friday, Oct. 10 and Pacific on Saturday, Oct 11. Both games are slated for 7:00 pm.
