Highlanders Open Season With 79-52 Loss To New Mexico State

UC Riverside’s men’s basketball team traveled to Las Cruces, New Mexico to face New Mexico State in the 2008-09 season opener for both teams falling to the Aggies 79-52.
UCR had the hot hand in the early going jumping out to a 14-5 lead with six minutes gone in the first period. Five Highlanders shared in the scoring during the run with Jesse LeBou’s two three-pointers leading the way.
The Aggies regrouped, however, going on an 18-3 run to take a six point-lead with 8:49 to go in the first. They stretched that lead to 12 with 4:03 to go in the half before UCR cut it back down to eight with 1:49 remaining. New Mexico State ended the period on a 9-2 run capped by a long range three-pointer at the buzzer from Jonathan Gibson.
UCR’s cold shooting continued into the second half as they failed to score their first post-halftime points until Brandon Dowdy connected on a three-pointer with more than seven minutes gone in the second. The Aggies continued to stretch their advantage leading by as many as 35 midway through the period.
LeBou and Javon Borum each led the Highlanders with 11 points on the night followed by Konner Veteto’s 10. Veteto also paced UCR with six rebounds.
Next up for UCR is a Tuesday, home opener at the Student Recreation Center against Sacramento State, Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.
Notes – The Highlanders are now 0-8 in Division I season openers following this afternoon’s loss and have dropped nine straight season openers overall. Their last season-opening win came on November 19, 1999 in a 77-51 home win over Dominican College. That was also the last time UC Riverside has opened the season at home.
