Box Score
The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 67-63 win over Southern Utah at the UCR Student Recreation Center on Saturday evening. The win extended the Highlanders' home winning streak to a Division I era-best five straight games.
Over the team's previous four wins, it was UCR's defensive effort that made the difference, but they needed some big-time offensive performances to pick up the win over the Thunderbirds. Southern Utah shot a blistering 64.7 percent from the field in the first half, but led by just four as they headed to the locker room with a 26-22 lead. Aaron Scott helped the Highlanders keep things close by going a perfect 5-5 from the field in the period scoring 10 of UCR's 22 points before the break.
The Thunderbirds pushed their lead to seven with 13:57 to go in the game, but the Highlanders countered with a 10-1 run to take a two-point lead, 39-37. Brandon Dowdy scored seven of his16 points during the run as UCR took its first lead since there were nine minutes and 46 seconds left on the clock in the first.
The lead seesawed back and fourth for the remainder of the game with neither team able to generate more than a four-point advantage until a Dowdy jumper made the score 59-54 UCR. Southern Utah cut the Highlanders lead to two on two occasions, but UCR nailed their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Scott led all scorers with 20 points connecting on 9 of 10 shots on the night while Dowdy scored all 16 of his points after the break. The Thunderbirds continued their hot shooting in the second half making 50 percent of their shots after the break, but the Highlanders countered by shooting 68.2 percent in the second.
UCR takes a break for Finals this week before hitting the hardwood again on December 15 at Loyola Marymount at 7:05 pm.
Notes - UC Riverside’s five-game home winning streak is the longest streak in the team’s Division I history. UCR had held each of its last five opponents under 60 points prior to the win over the Thunderbirds.
