Highlanders Drop Pair At Portland State Volleyball Showcase

UC Riverside (5-5) lost its first two matches of the Portland State Volleyball Showcase by identical 3-0 scores to Oregon State and Portland State on Friday, September 12.
In the first match, the Beavers led wire-to-wire in the first set going on a 5-1 run that turned a two point advantage into a six point bulge. They would never relinquish the lead, eventually taking the game 25-19.
In the second set, neither team led by more than three until the final points of the match as a 6-1 Beavers run erased a two-point Highlanders advantage, and Oregon State took the set 25-20. In the third and deciding set, UCR led by as many as three late in the match, 16-13, but the Beavers eked out the 25-23 win.
Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) led the Highlanders with 16 kills in the match and Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) chipped in with 29 assists.
Against Portland State, the Highlanders led 12-11 midway through the first set but the Vikings ended it by scoring 13 of the final 20 points for a 25-18 win. In the second, UCR fell behind early, trailing by as many as nine before closing the deficit to three at 17-14. Once again, however, it was Portland State who had the kick at the end, taking the second set 25-21.
The third set saw the Highlanders jump out to a five point lead, but the Vikings chipped away at the advantage finally tying things up at 16. The teams were still tied at 23, but a Portland State kill and an attack error by the Highlanders gave the match to the Vikings.
