The UC Riverside volleyball team (5-10) fell to the Arizona Wildcats 3-2 and the Loyola Marymount Lions 3-1 in a mini-tournament at the Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles on Friday.
Against Arizona (9-1) the Highlanders hung tough in the first two sets but could not muster enough points to win either one dropping them 25-18 and 25-21. In the third set, tied at four apiece, a service error by the Wildcats gave UCR the lead -- a lead in which they did not relinquish throughout the remainder of the set, winning 25-19.
The fourth set was much more of a seasaw battle as there were 11 lead changes within the first 15 points. However, Shannon Moyneur's (Valley Center, CA) kill gave the Highlanders a 16-15 lead, and they never looked back to force a decisive fifth set. As hard as UCR fought to come back, though, they did not have enough to finish off the Wildcats, as Arizona went on to win the set, 15-10, and the match.
Kelly Fink led the attack for the Highlanders with 17 kills while Amanda Nilsson (Torrance, CA) and Jasmin White (Las Vegas, NV) had 12 and 10 kills respectively. Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) continued her assent into the UCR record books as she led with a team-high 42 assists.
In the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, trailing 26-25 in the first set, UCR rallied off three straight points to secure the set 28-26, before ultimately succumbing in the next three sets to Loyola Marymount (9-3) 25-20, 25-14, and 25-13.
UCR will now gear up for conference play as they face off against UC Irvine on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
