The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team, off to its best start since the 2005 season, ran into No. 6 UCLA Wednesday night at the UCR Student Rec Center falling in three competitive games. The Highlanders are now 3-2 on the season and travel to the Golden Bear Invitational this weekend where they face DePaul (Sept. 5, 4:30 pm), James Madison (Sept. 6 at 12:00 pm) and California (Sept. 6 at 7:00 pm).
After UCLA jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in Game 1, the teams traded points until close to the midway point of the first set. Up 10-5, the Bruins extended their lead to eight, winning four of the next five points. UCR closed the gap to five again at 17-12 before UCLA ended the game on an 8-4 run.
In Game 2 the Highlanders took the early lead and trailed by just one, 11-10, when the Bruins went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to seven. UCR cut the UCLA lead to four, 17-13, and were down by just five, 23-18, but UCLA picked up two of the last three points to take the second set.
Game 3 mirrored the first with the Bruins taking an early five point lead, 10-5, and slowly extending it throughout the match before winning the third set and the match, 25-16.
Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) led the Highlanders with nine kills, but only Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) recorded a kill percentage higher than .167 for UCR, while seven members of the Bruins posted figures above .250.
