Volleyball Travels North To Face Tigers And Aggies In Big West Play

The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team travels north on Friday and Saturday for Big West matches at Pacific and UC Davis. The Highlanders are coming off a 1-1 week in which they earned their first conference victory of the season in a 3-2 match against Cal Poly on Saturday, Oct. 23. Dominique Cowling (pictured) tied her career-high with 22 kills against the Mustangs.
This is the second meeting of the year between the Highlanders and both teams. In their previous matches, Pacific defeated UCR 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22 in a close 3-0 contest, while UC Davis beat the Highlanders in four games.
GAME NOTES
SMACK THAT
Seniors Dominique Cowling and Tonbara Youpele each recorded 22 and 20 kills respectively at CSUB on Oct. 9, and followed that up with identical kill tallies in the Highlanders win over Cal Poly on Oct. 23. Prior to this season, the last time two UCR players posted over 20 kills each came on Nov. 6, 2004 as Valeria Bueno and Jamie DeKiewiet tallied 23 and 27 kills respectively.
GIMME FIVE
The Highlanders three wins during the 2009 season have all been of the 3-2 variety: at Sac State on Sept. 5, at CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 9, and against Cal Poly on Oct. 22. Last season, two of UCR's wins were also of the 3-2 kind.
NEW FACE AT THE HELM
For the first time in 39 years the UC Riverside women's volleyball team has a new head coach at the helm of the program. The Highlanders hired former US Men's Volleyball Assistant Coach Ron Larsen on May 1, 2009, replacing longtime coach Sue Gozansky who retired after the 2008 season. Larsen earned his first win as a member of the Highlanders in a 3-2 marathon battle at Sacramento State on Sept. 5.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Senior outside hitter Dominique Cowling was named to the 2009 Utah Classic All-Tournament team after tallying 39 kills and averaging 3.90 kills per game, while senior outside hitter / middle blocker Kelley Quinn was named to the 2009 Sac State Invitational All-Tournament team for matches played Sept. 4-5. Bianca Endersby was the third Highlanders tournament honoree as she was named to the Pepperdine Asics Classic All-Tournament team after UCR's matches in Malibu on Sept. 11-13.
MAY I ASSIST YOU PLEASE?
Senior setter Brittney Murrey ended the 2008 season ranked third all-time in Highlanders history in assists (2,639) and assists per game (8.8). The El Cerrito, CA native has her sights set on surpassing Kym Murphy at the second slot by season’s end.
KILLER ATTACK
Dominique Cowling surpassed Michelle Close '93 after her matches against UC Davis and Pacific on Oct. 2-3 to take hold of the 10th spot on the Highlanders career total attacks list. She then moved up to ninth place after the Highlanders match at Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 15.
