Cal State Northridge Tops UC Riverside 4-1 In Men's Soccer

With three matches remaining in the 2009 men's soccer season, postseason berths in the Big West Tournament are still up for grabs and Cal State Northridge (8-7-2, 3-4-1) helped themselves out Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 win over the visiting Highlanders (1-14-1, 0-7-1). The victory moved the Matadors into a tie for fourth place in the conference with Cal State Fullerton.
Cal State Northridge outshot the Highlanders 10-4 in the first half getting on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute of play as Robert Pate's header gave him his third goal of the season. Mattias Bonvehi and Rene Anguiano were both credited with assists on the play.
UCR's Joel Garcia tied the match just prior to halftime scoring on a 40 yard blast with 3:35 remaining in the first. It was his team-leading third goal of the year.
The score remained tied at one the 54:59 mark when Chad Borak notched his first goal of the season for the Matadors off of a cross from Bonvehi. Bonhevi picked up his third assist of the match three and a half minutes later as he found Daniel Yoon for his first score of the year and a 3-1 advantage.
Cameron Sims ended the scoring in the 67th minute as he scored on a cross from Sunghyun Kim to make it 4-1 Cal State Northridge.
Next up for UCR is the final home match of the 2009 season—a Wednesday, November 4 meeting against nationally ranked UC Irvine.
