Missed Opportunities End UCR's Upset Bid As They Fall 1-0 To #19 UC Irvine
11/4/2009 9:38:12 PM | Men's Soccer
The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Program honored its six seniors Wednesday evening and hoped to send them off with a win over 19th ranked UC Irvine, but two missed offensive opportunities and a second half Anteaters goal added up to a 1-0 loss for the Highlanders.
UC Irvine outshot UCR 14-4 over the first 45 minutes, but the Highlanders had the best scoring opportunity in the half when a defensive miscue in the Anteaters backfield left the ball at Cesar Diaz's (pictured) feet. His shot caromed off of the left post and the teams went into the half tied at zero.
The match remained scoreless until the 63rd minute when Jorge Reyes stole the ball at midfield and found Spencer Thompson in the left side of the UCR box. Thompson's shot from nine yards out beat Highlanders keeper Cody Suppé, and the Anteaters led 1-0.
UC Riverside had another golden opportunity less than 10 minutes later when Robert Cate was fouled in the UC Irvine box. Nathan Paterson took the free kick, but Anteaters keeper Victor Chinchilla guessed correctly, diving to his left and making the save.
The Highlanders continued to push for the tying goal, outshooting UCI 9-6 in the half, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
UC Riverside travels to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday for its final match of the 2009 season. Kick off is scheduled for 7 pm PT.
