Box Score - UC Riverside 3, CSU Bakersfield 2
Bakersfield, CA - Led by career-highs in kills by seniors Dominique Cowling (pictured) and Tonbara Youpele, the UC Riverside volleyball team won the last three straight sets at CSU Bakersfield on Friday night to earn a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Roadrunners.
CSUB won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-20 before the Highlanders (2-12) rallied for the next three, 25-16, 27-25, and 15-10. The last time the Highlanders won the final three sets for the 3-2 victory came on Oct. 4, 2008 against Cal State Northridge.
This is UCR's second win of the year and the first since a 3-2 win at Sacramento State on Sept. 5.
Cowling led all players with a career-high tying 22 kills while Youpele recorded a career-best 20 kills en route to the Highlanders season-best .319 attack percentage. Kelley Quinn added 12 kills and a game-high .647 percentage while Brittney Murrey posted 46 assists and three different Highlanders recorded four blocks each.
After falling behind 2-0 after the first two sets, UCR quickly took a 6-0 lead to open the third set off five consecutive Runner (10-11) errors and one Amanda Nilsson service ace. The Highlanders kept their lead greater than four the remainder of the set as they hit .500 as a team to close out 25-16.
The fourth set could not have been as drastically different for both teams as the set before, as there were 16 tie scores and eight lead changes throughout. CSUB led by their largest margin of the frame, 10-7, before UCR tied things up at 10 apiece on three consecutive kills.
The Roadrunners had the opportunity to close out the match as they led 24-22, but the Highlanders proved resilient as they tied up the set at 24 all before pulling out the 27-25 come-from-behind rally to force a decisive fifth set.
In the final set of the match, UC Riverside opened up strong by taking a 6-1 lead. CSU Bakersfield never got closer than four as the Highlanders took home their second win of the season.
UC Riverside returns to Big West Conference play on the road on Saturday night as they face Cal State Northridge at 7:00 pm. Live stats may be found here.
