Volleyball Hits The Road At CSU Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge

After their first home games of the 2009 season against UC Davis and Pacific last weekend, the UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team hits the road again for two games this weekend. On Friday the Highlanders travel to CSU Bakersfield for a non-conference match up that begins at 7:00 pm, while the next night UCR resumes Big West play with a 7:00 match at Cal State Northridge. The Highlanders and Roadrunners are meeting for the second time this season as the two teams played each other on Sept. 5 during the Sacramento State Invitational. CSUB won that last meeting 3-1, but historically the team's have each won 31 games against one another. However, their most recent match was also the only match played in UC Riverside's nine-year Division I history.
Cal State Northridge owns a 46-19 all-time record against the Blue and Gold, but the Highlanders won both contests between the teams last season.
The Highlanders opened up the home portion of their schedule last weekend, but fell to UC Davis and Pacific. Brittney Murrey and Kelley Quinn (both pictured) led the Highlanders against the Tigers with eight and seven blocks respectively.
GAME NOTES
NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the latest NCAA national stats, two Highlanders are ranked among the top-52 in three different categories. Redshirt freshman Bianca Endersby is ranked 29th in the country in blocks per set with 1.29, while senior Dominique Cowling is ranked 52nd in kills per set with 3.93 and 51st in points per set with 4.43. As a team, the Highlanders place 73rd of 329 squads with 2.26 blocks per game.
BIG WEST STATS
Three Highlanders are ranked among the top-10 in the Big West Conference in four different overall stat categories. Brianca Endersby leads all players with 1.29 blocks per game while Dominique Cowling is currently fourth in kills per game with 3.93 and tenth in services aces per game with 0.30, and Brittney Murrey ranks eighth with 8.32 assists per game.
NEW FACE AT THE HELM
For the first time in 39 years the UC Riverside women's volleyball team has a new head coach at the helm of the program. The Highlanders hired former US Men's Volleyball Assistant Coach Ron Larsen on May 1, 2009, replacing longtime coach Sue Gozansky who retired after the 2008 season. Larsen earned his first win as a member of the Highlanders in a 3-2 marathon battle at Sacramento State on Sept. 5.
MAY I ASSIST YOU PLEASE?
Senior setter Brittney Murrey ended the 2008 season ranked third all-time in Highlanders history in assists (2,639) and assists per game (8.8). The El Cerrito, CA native will set her sights on surpassing Kym Murphy (3,407) at the second slot, but has a ways to go before nearing Regina Carbajal with 4,492 assists at the top spot.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Senior outside hitter Dominique Cowling was named to the 2009 Utah Classic All-Tournament team after tallying 39 kills and averaging 3.90 kills per game, while senior outside hitter / middle blocker Kelley Quinn was named to the 2009 Sac State Invitational All-Tournament team for matches played Sept. 4-5. Bianca Endersby was the third Highlanders tournament honoree as she was named to the Pepperdine Asics Classic All-Tournament team after UCR's matches in Malibu on Sept. 11-13.
BLOCK THIS WAY
Junior Shannon Moyneur and senior Angela Pizzella ended the 2008 season ranked first and tenth respectively on UCR's career blocks per game list. Currently Moyneur still ranks at the top of the Highlanders charts.
KILLER ATTACK
Dominique Cowling surpassed Michelle Close '93 after her matches against UC Davis and Pacific on Oct. 2-3 to take hold of the 10th spot on the Highlanders career total attacks list.
