USC 77, UC Riverside 67 - Box Score
Pregame Warmup Video
Konner Veteto (pictured) scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and senior transfer Larry Gurganious added a career-high 13 points, but it wasn't enough as UC Riverside fell to the Trojans 77-67 Tuesday evening at The Galen Center in Los Angeles. Kyle Austin scored eight points in his first trip back to USC since transferring to UC Riverside two years ago.
The Trojans scored the first seven points of the game before UCR's Dwight Gordon connected on a jumper in the lane with 17:27 remaining in the first for the Highlanders' first points of the game. UC Riverside cut the Trojans lead to five on two other occasions in the first at 10-5 and 16-11, but USC put together a 12-0 run over a 3:18 stretch in the middle of the half to push their advantage to 17 at 28-11.
The Trojans took a 13-point lead into the locker room at the break, with an edge in most statistical categories. They outshot UCR 51.7 percent to 33.3 percent, had fewer turnovers (10-7) and outrebounded the Highlanders 15-11 in the period. USC's Dwight Lewis led all scorers with 17 points at the break on 6 of 11 shooting from the field including a perfect 3 for 3 from three-point range.
The Highlanders offense picked up the pace in the second half as UCR connected on 50 percent of their field goal attempts following the break. They also committed just two turnovers in the first 10-plus minutes of the second period cutting the Trojans lead to eight on three occasions.
Unfortunately they never could quite put the run together to take the lead, as the Trojans offense continued to click nailing 52.2 percent of their shots after the break. Lewis finished with a game-high 22 for USC while Nikola Vucevic and Marcus Simmons each chipped in with 18.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Thursday evening home meeting with La Verne. Tip is scheduled for 7 pm at the Student Recreation Center.
