Box Score - UC Riverside 80, Pepperdine 72
Malibu, CA - Senior Marissa Rivera (pictured) poured in a career-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures as the UC Riverside women's basketball team defeated Pepperdine 80-72 on Tuesday evening at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
UC Riverside took a six point half time lead and pushed it out to their largest margin of the game, 70-49, with 6:37 remaining, but a late Wave (2-3) rally closed the gap to seven with under 15 seconds to go. The Highlanders (2-3) were able to hold on down the stretch though to earn their second win of the 2009-10 season.
Rivera led the Highlanders with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. The twins, Rhaya Neabors and Rheya Neabors, added 18 and 12 points respectively, while Amber Cox had 10, all in the second half. Lauren Bell led the Waves with 20 points.
The Highlanders opened the game with a Rivera jumper 35 seconds in and took a 4-0 lead on a Rheya Neabors layup at 17:59 before the Waves could dent the scoring column with their first bucket two minutes in.
UCR's lead fluctuated between two and five in the first eight minutes until Pepperdine tied things at 13 all on a Shay Cooney-Wiliams three-pointer with 11:37 remaining in the first. The Waves then took their first lead of the game, 17-16, at 8:25 on another Cooney-Wiliams three-pointer.
The Highlanders battled back and went on a 10-3 run to open their largest margin of the first half, 26-19, with 6:13 to go in the period. However, a 9-2 Wave rally forced the third tie of the half at 28 all at the 4:19 mark.
UCR regained the lead in the next possession as a Rheya Neabors long ball started a 10-3 rally to close out the half as the Highlanders entered the locker room with a 38-32 lead. UC Riverside shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the field including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc while limiting Pepperdine to 40.0 percent from the field.
The Highlanders quickly took their six-point half time lead and built a double-digit advantage within three minutes of returning to the court. Following UCR's 21-point lead at 6:37, however, the blue and gold were outscored 23-10 to close out the game. The Highlanders hit 6-of-10 free throws down the stretch though to seal the victory.
UCR returns home to the Student Recreation Center on Friday, Nov. 27 for a 7:00 pm tip against Purdue. Fans may follow the game via live stats or listen to the play-by-play as the Voice Of The Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, calls the game live right here on gohighlanders.com.
