Men's Basketball Runs Wild Over Roadrunners In 87-47 Win
12/2/2009 7:53:03 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Riverside 87, CSU Bakersfield 47 - Box Score
The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team ran its winning streak to four in a row Wednesday evening at the Student Recreation Center jumping on the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners early and often on their way to an 87-47 win. It was the biggest win for the Highlanders since a 102-60 victory over Cascade College on December 4, 2004.
Kyle Austin (pictured) found Larry Gurganious under the basket with 12 seconds gone in the first and UCR was off to the races. They scored the first seven points of the game, 13 of the first 15, and led 21-3 with 5:36 gone in the half. Austin led the way at the break with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting and Gurganious added nine.
It was arguably the most complete half of basketball that the Highlanders have played in the Division I era. Offensively UCR connected on 50 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes, and they outrebounded the Roadrunners 25-17. But the defensive end of the floor was where the Highlanders really made a statement holding CSUB to just 3 of 25 shooting from the field including 0-10 from three-point range.
Leading 37-10 at the break, UC Riverside ran their lead to 40 points with 11:38 gone in the game, and had their biggest lead of 46 points at 72-26 with 7:54 remaining.
Austin and the Roadrunners' Traent Blakley tied for the game-high scoring lead with 19 points apiece. Gurganious finished with 13 and Rudy Meo (15 points) and Jesse LoBue (11) chipped in with double-figure efforts off the bench. UC Riverside shot 52.4 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range while holding CSUB to 23.7 percent from the field and 20.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Friday home game against San Diego as part of a double-header with the women's team. The men's game is scheduled to tip at 8 pm at the Student Recreation Center.
