Missoula, MT - The UC Riverside women's basketball team (3-9) dropped a 65-55 contest to the Montana Grizzlies (5-7) on Tuesday evening at Dahlberg Arena, their sixth loss in the past seven games.
The Grizzlies shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field while limiting the Highlanders to just 30.2 percent (19-of-63), their second-lowest percentage of the season.
Three Highlanders scored in double-figures led by Marissa Rivera and Alyssa Morris' 11 and Brittany Waddell's (pictured) 10 points. Rivera was just shy of a double-double as she also boarded a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Griz jumped out of the gate strong with a 9-0 run and held the Highlanders scoreless through the first five minutes of play in the first half. A Waddell three-point play at the 14:19 mark put UCR on the board, but Montana quickly built a 12-point lead, 17-5, three minutes later.
The Highlanders then rallied for an 8-2 run capped off by an Ashley Collier three-pointer to close the margin to six, 19-13, at the 6:44 mark, but the Lady Griz scored six unanswered points to push their lead back out to 12, 25-13, less than a minute later.
Montana forced 11 Highlander turnovers in the first period as they entered the locker room with a 31-22 advantage.
UCR took to the court in the second half down by nine points but promptly scored four straight to cut the lead to five, 31-26, as they held the Lady Griz scoreless for the first four and a half minutes. The Highlanders further lowered the margin to four points at two different occasions throughout the half, the last time with 8:42 remaining off a Rhaya Neabors jumper in the paint.
Montana countered, however, by pushing their lead out to 12, 54-42, with just over five minutes to go. The Highlanders could get no closer than eight down the stretch as the Grizzlies took home the 65-55 win.
UC Riverside starts the New Year with Big West Conference play as they travel to Long Beach State on Saturday, Jan. 2 for a 4:00 pm tip.
