
Highlanders Pick Up 79-69 Non-Conference Win Against CSUB

Riverside, CA – The UC Riverside women’s basketball team (14-9) extended their win streak to nine consecutive games with a 79-69 victory against Cal State Bakersfield (15-9) on Wednesday evening in a non-conference match up at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. Senior forward Ronéy Friend scored 16 points as she became just the twelfth player in UCR women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point barrier.
UC Riverside jumped out of the gate strong and had a 16-6 lead at the 13:54 mark after two Tainoisouti Lott (Moreno Valley, CA) free throws. The Roadrunners, though, responded with a 13-3 run over a four-minute span that cut the lead to two, 23-21, at the 6:07 mark.
The Highlanders rallied back and scored seven straight points on two Lott layups and a Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) three-pointer within a one-minute span that extended the lead as they went into halftime with a 43-32 advantage. UCR shot 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from beyond the arc to close out the half.
In the second, the ‘Runners cut the lead to four, 45-41, at the 15:17 mark, but the Highlanders responded and pushed the lead to 17 points on two different occasions. UCR scored a season-high 79 points on a season-high 54.7 percent (29-of-53) shooting from the field as they extended their win streak to nine straight games and 11 of the last 12.
Nkele led the Highlanders with her fifth double-double of the year, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing 13 boards. Friend added 16 points while Lott had her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Alyssa Morris (Fresno, CA) also added a career-high 12 points.
The Highlanders return to action with a Big West Conference match up against Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. Live game coverage is available at www.gohighlanders.com.
Ronéy Friend’s 16 points pushed her over the 1,000-point barrier, becoming just the twelfth player in UCR history to reach that mark. She is now one of three active players included in the 1,000-point club.
