Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside softball team had a 3-2 lead against No. 9 California after the second inning on Sunday at the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, but could not hold on as the Bears scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the 8-3 victory.
Cal touched UCR starter Marissa Alvidrez (3-7) for two runs in the first inning, but the Highlanders (3-13) responded by scoring three runs in the top of the second.
Brittany Keeney led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Curtis. Brooke Hebenton then reached on a fielding error by the short stop, and with two outs, Krystal Marquez homered to left field, giving UCR a 3-2 advantage.
The Bears clawed back in the third inning, though, as they scored six runs off four hits and one Highlander error. That score would remain intact for the rest of the game as neither team plated another run.
UCR closed out the DeMarini Invitational going 1-4 after defeating Indiana in the opening game but falling to Oregon State, #4 Stanford, and Minnesota.
The Highlanders are back in action on March 6-8 as they travel to San Luis Obispo for the Mustang Classic hosted by Cal Poly. UCR first faces Utah State at 9:00 am on Friday, followed by an 11:30 am tilt with Temple.
