UC Riverside 10, Loyola Marymount 9 (10 inn) - Box Score
Listen to Michael Hur's 10th-inning RBI
Two days after picking up a shutout win over No. 23 Oklahoma State, the Highlanders found themselves in a slugfest at Loyola Marymount Tuesday afternoon. It took 10 innings, but UCR finally came out on top, 10-9.
It looked like it might be a long day for the Highlanders (10-3) in the early going as LMU (8-7) scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead. Ryan Platt got the start for UCR, but was touched for five hits and one walk through two and two thirds innings before Head Coach Doug Smith went to the bullpen. All of LMU's first four runs were credited to Platt, and Dustin Emmons was called upon to put out the fire.
The 6-1 right hander held the Lions scoreless over the next three innings, and the UCR bats arose from their collective slumber scoring three runs in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
After allowing single baserunners in the fourth, fifth and sixth, Emmons ran into some trouble in the seventh. With a runner on second and one out, the La Crescenta native gave up an RBI double to Ryan Wheeler. Wheeler advanced to third on a wild pitch, and after a walk to Angelo Songco, another wild pitch brought home the second run of the inning. Emmons picked up the second out of the seventh and gave way to closer Joseph Kelly. Trevor Gee greeted Kelly with a run-scoring triple before the Highlanders were able to get out of the inning.
Trailing 7-5 heading into the top of the eighth, the Highlanders put runners on first and third with two outs. Michael Hur singled through the left side to make the score 7-6, and Ryan Goetz reached when Lions center fielder Even Simonitsch dropped his fly ball bringing home two more runs for an 8-7 UCR lead.
Kely was still on the hill for the Highlanders in the ninth, but after striking out the first batter Songco drilled a home run to left center to knot the game at eight.
Carl Uhl led off the top of the tenth with a walk and advanced to second on a Joey Gonzales ground out. Hur followed with a single through the right side scoring Uhl with the go-ahead run. Tony Nix added an RBI single later in the inning to give UCR a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the tenth.
Kevin Dickey entered the game to pitch for the Highlanders giving up back-to-back singles to open the frame. Back-to-back groundouts scored one run and put the tying run at second, but Dickey got Ryan Hawthorne to ground back to the mound to end the game.
Kelly picked up his first win of the season while Dickey earned his first save of the year. LMU's Xavier Esquivel was saddled with the loss.
The Highlanders welcome Columbia to the Riverside Sports Complex this weekend for a three-game set beginning March 13 at 6 pm.
