Highlanders Nine Wins Sixth In A Row Behind Andriese Three-Hitter
3/6/2009 2:47:14 PM | Baseball
UC Riverside 4, Gonzaga 0 - Box Score
UC Riverside freshman Matt Andriese pitched the best game of his young career Friday morning, throwing a complete-game three-hitter in a 4-0 shutout of Gonzaga in Day 2 of the Palm Springs Invitational. The Redlands native struck out three in facing three batters over the minimum in just his third start for the Highlanders.
The win is the sixth straight for UCR and improves their record to 9-2. That 9-2 mark ties the best start in UC Riverside history as the 2003 squad also won nine of its first 11 ballgames on its way to becoming the first Highlanders team to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
In picking up his first collegiate win, Andriese allowed just three base runners retiring 18 consecutive batters at one point. Only two of those runners advanced to second base,
The Highlanders gave the right-hander a 1-0 lead to work with in the bottom of the first when Michael Hur's RBI single brought home Joey Gonzales who had walked two batters earlier. UCR tacked on three more runs in the second as catcher Daniel Pellegrino drilled a two-run home run to left with one out in the inning, and center fielder Carl Uhl followed shortly thereafter with a solo blast. It was all Andriese needed to secure the win.
The Highlanders have two games remaining at the Palm Springs Invitational - Saturday against #24 Oregon State at 2:00 pm and Sunday against #23 Oklahoma State at 6:00 pm.
