No. 24 Oregon State 5, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
The UC Riverside Baseball Team saw its six-game winning streak fall by the wayside Saturday afternoon in a 5-1 loss to No. 24 Oregon State at the Palm Springs Invitational thanks in large part to some defensive miscues and a lack of timely hitting.
Matt Montgomery was on the hill for the Highlanders allowing four baserunners through the first three innings. He emerged unscathed, however, as the score remained 0-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. That's when things fell apart for UCR. Ryan Ortiz reached on a throwing error by shortstop Trevor Hairgrove to open the inning, and a single to left center by Jared Norris moved him to second. A sac bunt by Adalberto Santos put runners at second and third with one out, and a Brett Casey single through the right side of the infield scored both.
Koa Hakalehoe reached after dropping a bunt down the third base line, and a ground out to Montgomery put runners at second and third with two outs. The Beavers cleared the bases again with a single up the middle off the bat of Joey Wong. A wild pitch moved Wong to second where he promptly scored via a John Wallace single to right for the fifth and final run of the inning. Four of the five runs in the inning were unearned, and the deficit proved to great for the Highlanders to overcome.
Offensively, the Highlanders had their opportunities in the early going off of Oregon State starter Tanner Robles. A double-play erased a first-inning UCR walk and the Highlanders had the bases loaded in the third with two outs and failed to score. They opened the fourth with their first three batters reaching base chasing Robles. Sam Gaviglio came in to the game with the bases loaded and nobody out, and after inducing a short fly ball off the bat of Daniel Pellegrino that failed to bring the runner home, got a double play from Brian McConkey to end the frame.
The Highlanders touched Gaviglio for a run in the top of the sixth when a Joey Gonzales sac fly brought home Michael Hur, but that ended the scoring for both teams on the day.
Gaviglio (2-0) picked up the win for Oregon State pitching four and two thirds innings of three-hit ball, while Montgomery (2-1) was saddled with ihs first loss of the season.
