Utah State 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
UC Riverside 6, Temple 0 - Box Score
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team traveled to the central coast on Friday for two games at the Mustang Classic hosted by fellow Big West competitor Cal Poly. In the first game of the day the Highlanders dropped a 4-1 decision to Utah State, but in the rubber game UCR shutout Temple 6-0 at Bob Janssen Field.
Against Utah State, UCR (3-14) plated their one and only run of the morning on a wild pitch in the first inning. Kameryn Hebenton doubled to center field and stole third, then reached on the error by the Aggie pitcher.
Utah State tied things up in the third with one run and added another in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. In the seventh, the Aggies touched relief pitcher Amy Lwin for two insurance runs to close out the game.
Getting the starting nod for the Highlanders in game two was senior Stephanie Marshall, who pitched a complete three-hit game and earned her first win of the season.
UCR's single run in the third inning was identical to their lone run in the first game, where Kameryn Hebenton reached on a wild pitch. The Highlanders bats became hot in the fifth inning, however, as they batted around the order and drove in five runs on six hits.
After a Patricia Adgar single to center field and subsequent stolen base, Hebenton tripled to right field sending Adgar home. Taylor Thomas' sacrifice fly then plated Hebenton from third.
After two straight singles and a walk, Krystal Marquez's two-RBI single to center field sent Jojo Mendoza and Brittany Keeney home, lengthening UCR's lead. Jessica Vasser ended the inning for the Highlanders with another single that scored Katie Curtis from third.
Hebenton led UCR on the day with three runs, three hits, and one RBI, while Marquez had two RBI and two hits.
The Highlanders remain in the central coast for another two days as they face off against Temple at 11:30 am on Saturday followed by a 7:00 pm game with Sacramento State.
