UC Irvine 16, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
UC Irvine used a three-run fourth and a five-run fifth to chase UCR starter Paul Bargas and blow open a 1-1 tie eventually picking up the 16-1 Big West Conference win over the Highlanders. Trevor Hairgrove (above) knocked in the lone UCR run. Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday, April 18 at 6 pm.
The game was tied at one through the first three innings as the Anteaters (24-10, 9-1) scored one in the second and the Highlanders (20-11, 2-5) picked up the equalizer in the third. Bargas (4-3) threw an economical 22 pitches through the first three frames, and the teams appeared headed for a pitcher's dual.
The game didn't stay tied much longer, however, as the Anteaters put three on the board in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back one-out singles by Ronnie Shaeffer and Francis Larson and a double to center by Tommy Reyes brought two runs home, and a DJ Crumlich single to left made it 4-1 UCI.
The following inning, the Anteaters put the game out of reach. Two of the first three batters reached base to put runners at second and third. With one out, Eric Deragisch lined a shot back at Bargas that the lefty partially blocked with his glove, but also caught him on the thigh. A run scored on the play, and after a few warm up tosses, Bargas continued. He was greeted, upon his return, by back-to-back home runs to Shaeffer (three-run) and Larson (solo) to make it 9-1 Anteaters. The Highlanders made the call to the bullpen bringing in Matt Larkins, who picked up two ground outs to work out of the inning.
UC Irvine wasn't done scoring, however, as they plated two more in the seventh and five more in the eighth off of Larkins, Mike Wolford and Kevin Dickey. The Highlanders, on the other hand, managed just one hit after the third inning. Anteater starter Daniel Bibona went seven innings giving up four hits, walking two and striking out seven in improving his record to 6-1.
