UC Irvine 9, UC Riverside 6 - Box Score
UC Irvine (25-10, 10-1) put six on the board in the first inning Saturday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex and withstood a late Highlanders comeback attempt on their way to a 9-6 win over UCR (20-12, 2-6).
Highlanders starter Matt Andriese came into the game with the best ERA on the team at 2.29, but by the time he left the mound with two outs gone in the first, it had risen to 3.60. He opened the game sandwiching two lineouts to right around a single, and a grounder off the mound to second looked to be the third out. However, Eric Deragisch, who was running from first on the play, beat Bryan Horst to the bag to extend the inning. Andriese walked the next batter and then gave up a single, a double and a pair of singles to make the score 6-0 UC Irvine. Dustin Emmons replaced Andriese and got a groundout to end the threat.
UCI tacked on another run in the top of the second, but in the bottom of the frame, UCR started chipping away at the seven-run Anteater lead. Robert Brantly opened the inning with a double to left center, Michael Nesbitt singled down the left field line sending Brantly to third, and a fielder's choice grounder to short by Horst scored Brantly. One out later, Joey Gonzales doubled to right field and Horst scored after UCI second baseman Casey Stevenson mishandled the relay throw.
Emmons meanwhile, held the Anteaters in check through the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, UCR picked up another run when Michael Hur's double to center brought home Carl Uhl who singled and stole second earlier in the frame.
The Anteaters finally got to Emmons in the top of the sixth plating two to increase their lead to 9-3. UC Irvine starter Christian Bargman pitched into the sixth for the Anteaters giving way to Noel Avison with two outs in the sixth.
The Highlanders chased Avison in the bottom of the eighth as UCR put together a two-out rally. Horst doubled and Bryan McConkey brought him home with a single through the right side to make it 9-4 Anteaters. Brock Bardeen replaced Anderson and was met promptly by a Tony Nix single. A wild pitch sent McConkey to third and Nix to second, and a Uhl single to left center cut the deficit to three. That was all the Highlanders could muster, however, as they went in order in the ninth.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday, April 19 at 2 pm at the Riverside Sports Complex.
