Hur's Three-Run Blast Helps Highlanders, Bargas To 9-0 Win Over CS Northridge
4/24/2009 4:35:41 PM | Baseball
UC Riverside 9, Cal State Northridge 0 - Box Score
Trevor Hairgrove's solo shot in the third gave the Highlanders the lead, Michael Hur's (above) three-run blast in the fifth extended the lead, and Tony Nix's pinch-hit, three-run homer in the ninth gave the Highlanders an insurmountable lead as UC Riverside (22-13, 3-7) snapped a three-game Big West Conference losing streak with a 9-0 win over Cal State Northridge (17-23, 4-9) Friday afternoon. Paul Bargas improved his record to 5-3 with a complete-game, seven-hit shutout.
Preserving a shutout late in the game was the last thing on Bargas's mind early on, however, as the Matadors put runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the second. Tommy Simis dropped down a suicide squeeze bunt that Bargas fielded cleanly nailing John Parham at the plate. That put runners on first and second with two outs. Justin DeMarco ripped a single to right, but Highlanders rightfielder Joey Gonzales's throw beat Todd Eskelin home, and UCR was out of the inning.
Bargas settled down after that point allowing just three hits the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, Hairgrove gave Bargas the only run he would need when he homered to open the top of the third. The score was still 1-0 Highlanders in the top of the fifth when Hur stepped to the plate with Bryan McConkey on third and Michael Nesbitt on first. He promptly hit his fifth homerun of the year over the centerfield fence for a 4-0 UCR advantage.
The Highlanders scored two more in the sixth on an RBI double by Gonzales and a McConkey RBI single. Tony Nix put the capper on the evening when he connected on a three-run homer in the ninth to make the score 9-0 UCR.
The Matadors and Highlanders play again on Saturday, April 25 at 1 pm.
