UC Riverside 10, CSU Bakersfield 2 - Box Score
The UC Riverside Baseball Team took a break from Big West Conference competition this week and came away with a 10-2 win at CSU Bakersfield Thursday afternoon in game one of the three-game series with the Roadrunners.
The Highlanders (19-8) got all the runs they would need in the top of the first as Carl Uhl opened the game with a double down the right field line and stole third one out later. Michael Hur walked to put runners on first and third, and Ryan Goetz's fly ball to left brought home the first run of the game. Hur advanced to second on the throw, and Robert Brantly cleared the bases with a two-run homer to make it 3-0 UCR.
The Roadrunners (7-22) got one back in the second off of Highlanders starter Paul Bargas (4-2) as Jason Kudlock singled to open the frame and Jeremy Rodriguez followed with a double to left center. It was the last run CSUB would get off of Bargas who allowed just three hits after the second inning.
UC Riverside put six more on the board in the eighth off of Roadrunners starter Mickey Jannis (0-6) and reliever Garrett Branske. Goetz and Brantly singled and doubled respectively to start the inning, sending CSUB to the pen. Branske replaced Jannis and promptly gave up a run-scoring single to Joey Gonzales. Brantly advanced to third on the play and a passed ball brought Brantly home and sent Gonzales to second.
Brian McConkey drew a walk, and he and Gonzales each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Eddie Young drew a walk as well to load the bases. and Trevor Hairgrove made it 8-1 with a bases clearing double. CSUB finally recorded the first out of the inning on a Uhl groundout which advanced Hairgrove to third. Tony Nix's fly ball to center scored Hairgrove for a 9-1 Highlanders advantage, and Branske finally worked his way out of the inning after getting Hur to fly out to right.
Matt Larkins replaced Bargas to pitch the bottom of the eighth for UCR giving up an unearned run to CSUB, but the Highlanders got the run back in the top of the ninth on a Gonzales RBI groundout. Kolby Moore pitched a scoreless ninth for UC Riverside to seal the win.
The Roadrunners and Highlanders play again tomorrow at 2 pm and on Saturday at 1 p.m.
