
UC Santa Barbara Spoils Highlanders Senior Day With 6-4 Win

UC Santa Barbara 6, UC Riverside 4 - Box Score
The Highlanders bid farewell to their three seniors Sunday afternoon, and they are hoping they didn't also say goodbye to their postseason hopes, as UC Santa Barbara spoiled the senior celebration with a 6-4 win. Carl Uhl, Brandon Schnebly and Ryan Platt were all honored prior to Sunday's game - their last home game for UC Riverside.
Matt Montgomery (2-2), still working his way back from an injury, threw the first two innings for the Highlanders giving up two runs in the first on three Guchos singles. Paul Bargas, who missed his normal Friday start after coming down with food poisonng earlier in the week, took over for Montgomery in the third. He struggled through his first inning of work, giving up four hits and hitting a batter allowing UC Santa Barbara (28-21, 10-11) to double their lead to 4-0.
The Highlanders (31-18, 10-11) finally got off the shcnide in the bottom of the fourth when Robert Brantly took a one out offering from Gauchos starter Zach Samuels (3-2) and deposited it over the right field wall. One out later, Justin Shultz laced a double to center and Bryan Horst followed with a double to left center to cut the lead to 4-2.
Uhl doubled to open the bottom of the fifth, moving to third on a Michael Nesbitt groundout, and scoring on a Michael Hur sacrifice fly to reduce the UC Santa Barbara lead to one.
Bargas settled down after his shaky start retiring the Gachos in order in the fourth and fifth innings, but UCSB scored a pair in the top of the sixth on a Robby Cummings homer to right and an RBI single by Mark Haddow.
Shultz picked up his second RBI of the game blasting a two-out home run to left center in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-4 Gauchos. Despite producing five baserunners over the final three innings, the Highlanders weren't able to score again, allowing UC Santa Barbara to avoid the sweep with the 6-4 win.
UC Riverside has four games remaining on their regular seaosn schedule, all on the road. They travel to USC on Tuesday and then play their final thre Big West Conference series at Cap Poly over the weekend.
