UC Riverside 7, Pacific 4 - Box Score
Carl Uhl (above) went three for five with three runs scored tying the UC Riverside career Division I-era runs scored record and Matt Andriese scattered nine hits over eight innings as the Highlanders bounced back from Friday night's tough loss to take a 7-4 win over Pacific Saturday night.
The Tigers (18-23, 8-9) took a 1-0 lead in the first for the second time in as many games as J.B. Brown's sacrifice fly scored Nick Longmire from third. That run was charged to UC Riverside starter Matt Montgomery who was making his first appearance since being shelved with a sore elbow following his March 28 start against Cal State Fullerton.
Montgomery was only slated to pitch an inning, however, and he gave way to Andriese in the second. By the time Andriese took the mound, the score was tied at one as Michael Hur's groundout to second scored Uhl who started the bottom of the first by singling up the middle, stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Highlanders (26-14, 6-8) staked Andriese to a 2-1 lead in the second when Trevor Hairgrove's grounder to short scored Brandon Schnebly, but Pacific got the run back in the top of the third sandwiching two singles around a pair of ground outs to tie things up at two.
The Highlanders took the lead once again in the bottom of the fifth as they batted around in the inning plating four: Bryan Horst led off with a double and came home after two wild pitches; Hur's double three batters later plated Tony Nix and Uhl; and Hur came home when Brian McConkey drew a bases-loaded walk.
Uhl accounted for another Highlander run in the sixth when his solo shot over the right field wall made the score 7-2. That run also tied Uhl with Brian Whalbrink (2001-03) for first place on the Highlanders Division I-era charts for runs scored.
It wouldn't be a UCR-Pacific game if things didn't get tense in the ninth, and Saturday was no different. The Tigers put runners on second and third with one out when Mike Walker scored on a ground out to second. A wild pitch brought Ben Gorang home to make the score 7-4, but Andriese induced a grounder to short off the bat of Joey Centanni and the Highlanders had the win in the books.
Game three of the three-game series is slated for Sunday, May 3 at 1 pm.
