UC Riverside 5, Pacific 1 - Box Score
Paul Applebee (above) kept the Pacific Tigers off balance for seven and two thirds innings while Michael Hur and Trevor Hairgrove scored two runs each as the Highlanders took a 5-1 win over Pacific on Sunday. The victory moved UCR into fifth place in the Big West and kept their NCAA postseason hopes alive.
Applebee and Tigers starter David Rowse were locked in a pitcher's duel for most of the afternoon as Applebee allowed just two hits and walked a pair through the first seven innings and Rowse gave up two unearned runs while scattering six hits and two walks through five and a third.
The Highlanders scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit. Hairgrove reached on a fielders choice following an inning-opening walk to Bryan Horst, Carl Uhl followed with a chopper to third that bounced off of Mike Walker's glove for a two-base error, and Tony Nix's fly ball to center brought Hairgrove home for the 1-0 UCR lead.
UCR touched Rowse for another run in the bottom of the sixth as Hur opened the inning with a single to center. Robert Brantly's single to right moved Hur to third chasing Rowse. His replacement, Cole Akins induced a grounder to third from Dan Pellegrino that could have ended the inning, but Walker mishandled it again for his second error of the day. The error allowed Hur to score making it 2-0 Highlanders
Meanwhile Applebee (7-2) gave up a single in the first and a single in the sixth with only one Pacific baserunner advancing into scoring position through the first seven innings.
UC Riverside gave Applebee some breathing room in the bottom of the seventh when Hairgrove opened the frame with a triple to left center and Uhl brought him home with a double to right. Nix sacrificed Uhl to third and Hur's single to right made it 4-0. Uhl's run was the 160th of his career moving him past Brian Wahlbrink into first place on the Highlanders Division I-era career runs scored list.
Thomas Berolzheimer replaced Akins after Hur's single, and was quickly greeted by a single to center by Ryan Goetz which sent Hur to third. Brantly lifted a fly ball to center scoring Hur for a 5-0 UCR lead.
The Tigers threatened to put together a rally of their own in the top of the eighth as back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out. Nick Longmire singled through the left side to plate Walker, and one batter later J.B. Brown singled to short loading the bases.
Head Coach Doug Smith made the call to the bullpen bringing in Dustin Emmons to replace Applebee, and the La Crescenta, CA native picked up an inning ending grounder to first.
In the top of the ninth, Emmons gave up a one-out double to Jamie Niley, but a grounder to second and strikeout gave the Highlanders the 5-1 win.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Tuesday road tilt at UNLV. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm PT.
