Women's Soccer Looks To Rebound Against Oregon State Beavers
8/21/2009 8:40:29 PM | Women's Soccer
The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (0-1-0) is preparing this week for its home opener on Friday, August 28, as the Oregon State Beavers visit the UCR Soccer Stadium for a 7 pm PT kickoff.
The Highlanders are looking to erase two losses from their memories in the match. The most recent is from last Friday as UCR dropped its season opener in a 1-0 loss at CSU Bakersfield. Jessica White (pictured) allowed just one goal on the night in her first start for the Highlanders.
The second is from two years ago when UC Riverside found itself on the short end of a 2-0 decision to the Beavers in the first-ever meeting between the clubs.
Coming into Friday's match, Oregon State also owns an 0-1-0 record having dropped a 1-0 decision at home to open the season against Portland State.
UC Riverside struggled to get its offense on track in their 1-0 loss at CSUB as they managed just seven shots on the night, only one of which was on goal.
GAME NOTES
SEARCHING FOR A NEW SET OF GOALS
The Highlanders scored 32 goals a year ago, but the feet responsible for just 16 of them return for the 2009 season. The biggest loss is all-conference performer Tessa Lennala who paced UCR and the Big West in 2008 with 11 goals and 27 points. Heidi Gassaway (nee Garrett), who finished fourth in the conference in scoring a year ago with nine goals and 21 points, is the top returning scorer for the Highlanders.
KEEP OUT
Jessica White, who served as Brittany Goetz's backup in goal a year ago seeing action in four matches, is expected to start the year between the posts for the Highlanders in 2009. In her first action of the year, she saw 10 shots and allowed just one goal in UCR's 1-0 loss at CSU Bakersfield. Two junior transfers, Reanna "Ray" Gibbs and Emily Hart, will also compete for time in goal.
SIDELINE ASSISTANCE
Former San Diego goalkeeper Tommy Tate became a member of the Highlanders coaching staff this summer joining Head Coach Veronica O'Brien and Assistant Coach Kerri Patterson. The UCR coaching family will grow again at the end of the season as Patterson and her husband, Michael, are expecting their first child in December.
OFF THE CHARTS
Heidi Gassaway enters her junior season ranked fifth on the Highlanders career points and goals scored charts and sixth in assists.
