Highlanders Earn First Big West Win Of Season, 74-61 Over Matadors

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team snapped their five-game losing skid with a 74-61 victory over Cal State Northridge on Thursday evening at the Student Rec Center, their first Big West Conference victory of the season. Head Coach John Margaritis also earned his 200th career victory on the night, as the Highlanders move to 4-12 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Four Highlanders scored in double-figures led by Rhaya Neabors (pictured) career-high 21 points. Marissa Rivera also added 21 while Amber Cox had 12 and Alyssa Morris added 11. Rheya Neabors pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and added seven assists. Analee Viena-Lota had 15 points for the Matadors, who fall to 2-12, 0-4.
In the first half, there were three tie scores within the first four minutes of play before CSUN opened an 18-11 lead at the 9:25 mark.
UC Riverside rallied for eight straight points off two long balls and a layup to regain the lead, 19-18, with under six minutes remaining. The teams then traded buckets to close out the half as the Highlanders entered the break up just 26-24.
In the second period, the game stayed within five points for the first five minutes until UCR slowly built a double-digit lead, 44-34, capped off by a three-point play from Rivera with 10:04 to go.
The Highlanders kept their lead between eight and 10 points for the majority of the second half as CSUN was forced to foul within the last minute of play, enabling the Highlanders to increase their advantage to 15 points on two occassions down the stretch.
UCR shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from field including 51.6 percent (16-of-31) in the second half while limiting the Matadors to just 34.4 percent shooting (22-of-64). The Highlanders also forced 21 CSUN turnovers compared to 13 for the blue and gold.
The Highlanders continue Big West Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 16 with a 5:00 pm tip against UC Santa Barbara.
