Women's Hoops Defeat Conference-Leading Mustangs 76-59

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team extended their winning streak to three straight games after a 76-59 defeat of conference-leading Cal Poly on Thursday evening at the Student Recreation Center. The Highlanders improve to 3-2 in Big West play and 6-12 overall while the Mustangs move on to 11-6, 4-2.
All five starters for UCR scored in double-figures led by senior Amber Cox's (pictured) 18 points. Alyssa Morris added 14 points, Rhaya Neabors had 12, Marissa Rivera added 11, and Rheya Neabors had 10. Kristina Santiago had 14 points for Cal Poly while Brittany Lange added 13.
In the first half, both teams traded buckets early on and neither led by more than three points through eight minutes of play. UCR then took a five point advantage, 20-15, at the 8:39 mark only to see Cal Poly go on a 7-2 run to tie things at 22 all with 6:21 remaining. The Highlanders then closed out the half on a 14-0 run to take a 36-22 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, the Highlanders opened up a 19 point lead, 45-26, just three minutes in, but the Mustangs outscored UCR 14-4 over the next five minutes to close the margin to nine, 49-40, with 11:48 remaining.
UCR responded by scoring five straight on two Rhe. Neabors free throws and a Cox three-pointer to push the lead back to double digits. Cal Poly never got closer than 10 points down the stretch as the Highlanders cruised to their 76-59 victory.
UC Riverside shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc, including a blistering 55.6 percent (5-of-9 long balls) in the second period. The Highlanders forced 23 Cal Poly turnovers while limiting the Mustangs to 11 points under their scoring average on the season.
The Highlanders conclude their four-game home stand with a 5:00 pm tip against UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Student Recreation Center.
