Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team's three goals Sunday evening against visiting UC Santa Barbara were the most they had scored in a Big West conference match since November 4, 2005, but it wasn't enough as the Gauchos scored the game-winner with 15:25 remaining to take a 4-3 victory.
Alex Racca put the Highlanders on the scoreboard with just 48 seconds gone in the match as UC Santa Barbara keeper Sam Hayden was called for a foul in the box, and Racca scored on the subsequent penalty kick.
That lead held up for 23 minutes when Michael Tetteh tied the score at one on a give and go from just outside the box. The Gauchos weren't done scoring in the half as Chris Hunter scored from 25 yards out on a restart, and UCSB went into the half with a 2-1 lead.
Racca was involved in UC Riverside's second goal of the match as well as his header towards the goal was corralled by Ruben Valencia who then hooked a shot past Hayden's outstretched arms with 7:56 gone in the second period.
Joel Garcia gave the Highlanders their second lead of the evening less than seven minutes later when Cesar Diaz found him with a long pass through the Gauchos defense. Garcia beat his man to the ball, and scored from 17 yards out on the left side of the box.
With 21:12 left on the clock, UC Riverside was whistled for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Luis Silva. Although Highlanders goalie Nick Goldreich got his hand on the ball, it wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the net, and the game was knotted at three.
David Opoku found Danny Barrera in the box with 15:25 to go, and Barrera's shot glanced off the left post and into the goal for the game-winner.
The Highlanders travel to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, October 20 for a 7 pm PT meeting with the Titans. UC Riverside will be looking to avenge a 2-1 loss to Fullerton from earlier in the year.
