Ruben Valencia's Pair Of Scores Gives Men's Soccer 3-2 Win Over Titans
10/20/2010 9:31:51 PM | Men's Soccer
UC Riverside 3, Cal State Fulerton 2 - Box Score
Fullerton, CA—Ruben Valencia scored two goals in the second period to put the Highlanders up 3-1, and UC Riverside withstood a late Cal State Fullerton charge as they picked up a 3-2 road win over the Titans. The victory snapped a five-match losing streak for the Highlanders who had dropped four straight matches by one just goal each.
Arnie Sanchez gave the Highlanders the lead in the 30th minute of play when he scooped up a Titans' defensive miscue and beat CSF keeper Trevor Whidon to the left post. That 1-0 score held up as the teams headed into the lockerrooms at half time.
The Titans tied it up seven minutes into the second period, however, as Nick Posthuma scored on a counter attack off of a Ritchie Gonzalez cross.
The tie was short-lived as Valencia scored his second goal in as many matches less than four minutes later. Whiddon challenged Valencia near the top of the box, but the UCR freshman flicked the ball over the keeper and had an empty net in his sites giving the Highlanders a 2-1 lead.
He netted his second goal of the evening a mere 34 seconds later when Sanchez intercepted a Whiddon clearing pass feeding it to Valencia at the 56:15 mark. The last member of the Highlanders to score three goals in two matches was Joel Crompton who did it on October 11 (2 against UC Irvine) and October 14 (1 at UCSB) of 2008.
Posthuma scored his second goal of the night for Cal State Fullerton with less than 10 minutes on the clock following a Kevin Venegas free kick.
The Titans pushed for the equalizer the rest of the way, but the Highlanders defense kept them out of the goal to secure the win. Cody Suppe got his first start of the year in goal for the Highlanders picking up five saves in the victory.
UC Riverside returns home next Wednesday for a 7 pm meeting with UC Irvine at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
