10/27/2010 9:23:01 PM | Men's Soccer
Box Score - #7 UC Irvine 2, UC Riverside 1
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside men's soccer team played a man down for nearly two-thirds of the game on Wednesday evening and almost came home with the upset of UC Irvine, but the No. 7 nationally ranked Anteaters prevailed in a 2-1 Big West Conference victory at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Highlanders (4-10-1, 1-6-0) scored the first goal of the game just 22:05 into the match. Tyler Wilson kicked the ball to Azeez Atanda on the right side, who redirected it into the box where Cesar Diaz's header deflected off UCI's Joel Bagby and into the net.
Less than six minutes later, UCR's Jose Diaz was whistled for a red card, forcing the Highlanders to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
UC Irvine (13-1-2, 6-0-1) scored the equalizer with seven minutes remaining in the first half as a series of passes around the UCR box resulted in a Zach Olow goal.
The Highlanders almost took a 2-1 lead a minute later as Cesar Diaz's shot at the 38:52 mark hit the top of the crossbar and bounced away.
Even though the Anteaters outshot the Highlanders 15 to 4 in the period, the game went into halftime tied at one.
UC Irvine capitalized on its man-advantage by scoring the eventual game-winning goal in the 59th minute of play. Brett Berman, assisting on his second goal of the night, passed to Miguel Ibarra on the right side who found an open Amani Walker 17 yards from the box for the score.
The Highlanders managed three more shots the rest of the period, but none were on goal as UCI held on for the 2-1 victory.
Cesar Diaz led UCR with four shots while Nick Goldreich had seven saves between the pipes.
UC Riverside heads to Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 30 for a 7:00 pm match in Big West Conference action.
