Men's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Overtime Win Over Cal State Northridge

Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team kept its postseason hopes alive Saturday evening with a 2-1 overtime win over Cal State Northridge. The Highlanders improved to 2-6-0 in conference while the Matadors fell to 2-6-1.
The teams combined for 33 shots in the initial frame, but it was the Matadors who got on the scoreboard first when Majeed Shahin connected on his first goal of the season in the 38th minute of play.
Less than five minutes into the second half, a Northridge defender pulled down Cesar Diaz in the box setting up a penalty kick for Alex Racca who tied the match at one.
The Highlanders caught a break in he 61st minute when Gustavo Villalobos was whistled for his second yellow card of the night drawing an automatic red card, forcing the Matadors to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
The score stayed tied through regulation, but with 6:01 gone in the first overtime period, Cesar Diaz's shot from 25 yards out found the back of the net giving the Highlanders a 2-1 victory.
Next up for UC Riverside is the team's final regular season home match on Wednesday, November 3. It is Senior Night for the Highlanders as they say goodbye to the Men's Soccer Class of 2011. Kick off is slated for 7 pm PT with Senior Night ceremonies taking place prior to the match.
