UCR Men's Soccer Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive With 1-0 Win Over UC Davis
11/3/2010 9:04:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Box Score - UC Riverside 1, UC Davis 0
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (6-10-1, 3-6-0) needed to run the table and get some assistance this week to grab the four seed in the Big West Tournament. So far so good, as they took care of business Wednesday evening in their home finale upending UC Davis, 1-0.
Cesar Diaz scored the lone goal of the match in the fifth minute of the first half thanks in large part to a Nick Goldreich goal kick that traveled clear into the UC Davis (6-12-0, 4-6-0) box.
Diaz tracked the ball down in the right side of the box about 16 yards out, and was able to beat the Aggies Omar Zeenni for what would prove to be the game winner.
It was Goldreich's first-ever assist as a keeper at any level of play, and the first for a Highlanders goalkeeper since Charles Alamo was credited with an assist on a Joey Pacheco goal in a 4-2 win against St. Mary's on September 19, 2004.
It was a special night for UC Riverside's five seniors, Normando Mariscal, Nissa Hatifie, Jeff Mowdy, Arnie Sanchez and Tyler Wilson. Not only were they honored by their teammates prior to the match, but they celebrated their win in front of the largest crowd ever to attend a Highlanders home soccer match.
UC Riverside concludes the regular season at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 pm.
