Highlanders Drop Season Opener at Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. – The Highlanders opened the 2026 slate at Oral Roberts University, and it was the second all-time meeting between the schools. The first came back in 2008 when the Highlanders topped the Golden Eagles 3-1 in Las Vegas, Nev.
However, tonight the result favored ORU, 2-0 over UC Riverside.
The Highlanders' Tarek Hamideh got the match's first shot in the ninth minute and missed over the crossbar.
Adrian Diaz and Jona Martinez both had shots blocked in the 11' and 22' respectively.
Oral Roberts had the best chance to score late in the first when the Highlanders committed a foul just outside the box. It went to replay, which confirmed the call. UC Riverside's defense held as the shot deflected out of bounds for a Golden Eagles' throw in.
The Highlanders had three corner kicks late but could not find the back of the net. The first half ended 0-0.
The Golden Eagles struck early in the second scoring on shot by Baptiste Lechuer and followed up 38 seconds later when Emre Aydin scored. Both goals came in the 50'.
The Highlanders did not record their first shot in the second until the 78' off the foot of Jona Martinez.
UC Riverside had a great opportunity late in the game (86') when Ryan Guerra had the second shot of the half and the first on goal for the match. Ethan Walker followed up with shots in the 86' and 87' but both missed the target.
In the 88' the Highlanders had another great chance when Xavier Smith put one on target for the second shot on goal of the match.
UC Riverside kept up the offensive pressure in the final minutes of the match but could not get on the board.
Next up for the Highlanders is Tulsa on Sunday with an 11am start.
