Salem, OR - Led by Seth Totten's 19th place finish, the UC Riverside men's cross country team finished sixth out of 23 teams at the 36th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational at Bush Park on Saturday morning.
Nationally ranked No. 9 Portland won the 8k Cardinal race with 25 points—37 more points than second place Chico State. Alaska Anchorage finished third with Idaho coming in fourth followed by host Willamette in fifth.
The Highlanders 202 total was good enough for sixth place out of the 23-team field.
Totten's 19th place individual finish in 24:22.60 led the Highlanders while also establishing a personal best time in the 8k for the freshman.
Steven Crum finished second for UCR and 37th overall in 24:57.28, while Omar Gonzalez placed 50th with a career-best time of 25:12.44.
Rounding out the Highlander squad is Talal Khan in 25:28.18 for a 64th place; Brett Valencia in 25:27.48 for 78th overall; Carlo Ordinola in 26:15.38 to finish 108th; and Ervin Romo in 26:52.48 to place 140th.
Alaska Anchorage's Marko Cheseto won the 8k race in 23:18.70.
“Seth Totten’s time is the fastest ever by a UCR true freshman, so we’re really happy with his performance," Head Coach Irv Ray commented. "But some of our other guys didn’t finish as well as we’d hoped, so we have some work to do on the men’s side between now and the Northridge Invitational.”
The Northridge Invitational is next up for the men's cross country team on October 16 at 8:00 am in Northridge, CA.
