Box Score - San Diego State 3, UC Riverside 1
San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team took a break from league play on Tuesday with a 3-1 loss at San Diego State in Peterson Gym.
Amanda Vialpando led the Highlanders (2-22) with a game-high 14 kills as UCR took home the first set 25-21. They couldn't hold on, however, as they Aztecs (11-11) won sets two, three and four by the scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-18.
The first set opened with 11 tie scores through the first 13 points of play. Down 13-12, the Highlanders scored six straight points and nine of the next 10 as they took a 22-14 lead. Annishia McKoy had three kills during that span while Vialpando and Kelly Simpson each added one.
UCR pushed its lead to set-point at 24-16, but the Aztecs made a late rally to get within three, 24-21. A service error by San Diego State's Andrea Hannasch put the set away for the Highlanders as they held on for the 25-21 victory.
The tides changed in the second set as the Aztecs came out of the gate strong by scoring four points before the Highlanders could get on board. UCR was forced to play catch-up the rest of the set but could never get closer than two as SDSU tied the match at one with a 25-19 win.
UCR again fell behind in the third and fourth sets as there were just three ties scores combined in those frames.
The Highlanders were down just one, 18-17 late in the fourth set, but were limited to one point the rest of the way as San Diego State scored five straight en route to the match victory.
Vialpando's game-high 14 kills ties her career-high, last set against Long Beach State on Oct. 16. Simpson added 12 kills while Megan Patterson had 14 digs for UC Riverside.
The Highlanders return home to the Student Recreation Center on Halloween, Oct. 31, for a 1:00 pm match against Arizona State in non-Big West action.
