Riverside, CA - Senior Brittany Waddell led all players with 16 points as the UC Riverside women's basketball team won its 2010-11 season opener 52-34 against the Montana Grizzlies at the Student Recreation Center on Friday evening.
The Highlanders (1-0) victory is just their second win in a season opener since making the transition to Division I in 2001-02.
Those 34 points allowed were the fewest ever allowed by UCR in the team's Division I history and the fewest allowed since the Highlanders limited San Francisco State to 30 on November 23, 1996 in a 48-30 win.
After a sluggish first half which saw Montana (0-1) lead 18-16 at the break, the Highlanders made a 8-0 run to start the second period to go up 24-18. The Grizzlies quickly cut it to one, 24-23 at the 16:10 mark, but the Highlanders never let up as they pushed their lead out to double digits nine minutes later.
UCR opened up its largest margin with just over two minutes remaining in the first second, 50-32, off a Waddell three-pointer—one of four on the night for the senior.
The Highlanders shot 39.4 percent from the field in the second half as they outscored Montana 36-16 to win 52-34.
Waddell went 5-of-16 from the field including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Alyssa Morris added 10 points for the Highlanders, who had 12 people see action in the season opener.
Sarah Ena led the Grizzlies with 10 points.
Both teams were rusty out of the gate as Montana led 5-0 though the first eight minutes of play. The Highlanders finally got on board thanks to a Brittany Palmer fastbreak layup at the 11:30 mark, but the Grizzlies went up by nine, 11-2, less than two minutes later.
The Highlandes scored six straight and 14 of the next 19 to tie the game at 16-16 with 2:10 remaining in the period before Montana entered the break up 18-16.
UC Riverside continues it's homestand against Arizona State on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
