Martin's 27 Points Not Enough As Spartans Hold On For 80-77 Win
11/28/2010 1:54:40 PM | Men's Basketball
San Jose State 80, UC Riverside 77 - Box Score
San Jose, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team erased a 12-point, first-half deficit, taking the lead with 3:23 gone in the second period, but they couldn't overcome 35 points by San Jose State's Adrian Oliver falling to the Spartans 80-77 Sunday afternoon.
The Highlanders began the game by missing their first five shots, but unfortunately, the same could not be said of Oliver who drained his first six shots of the game. He finally missed with 13:01 remaining in the first half, but by then San Jose State had a 19-10 lead. The Spartans would push that lead to 22-10, before UC Riverside started climbing back into the game.
Phil Martin kept the Highlanders close early, scoring 11 of the team's first 17 points, and Kevin Bradshaw got going shortly thereafter scoring five points in a 10-2 run that cut the Spartans' advantage to 28-27. Kareem Nitoto drained a three for his first bucket of the game with 3:20 to go in the first, tying the game at 30.
The Spartans took a 34-30 lead into the locker room, and in the second it was Oliver and Martin again continuing to carry their respective offenses: Oliver scored five of the Spartans first 10 points, while Martin chipped in with nine of 11 for UCR. It was a Martin jumper with 16:37 to go that put the Highlanders up for the first time in the game at 44-43.
That lead was shortlived, however, as a pair of Matt Ballard free throws with 10:00 left on the clock gave San Jose State a seven-point advantage. The Highlanders tied the game on two other occasions and had the ball down one three a number of times, but were unable to take the lead.
UCR had a chance to tie, down three, but Javon Borum's last second three-pointer bounced off the rim and out of harm's way.
Martin led the Highlanders with 27 points, while Bradshaw added a career-high 16, Nitoto added 13 and Borum scored 10.
The Highlanders return home this week for a Thursday, December 2 meeting with UT San Antonio. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT, and at halftime of the game, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team will be presented with its 2010 Big West Conference Championship rings.
