Saint Mary's 75 UC Riverside 56 - Box Score
Moraga, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team hung tough through the first half of their Tuesday evening game against Saint Mary's, but the Gaels connected on nine of 19 three-pointers after the break on their way to a 75-56 victory.
Saint Mary's came into the game averaging 84.9 points per game breaking the 40-point barrier before the half on six occasions. But the UC Riverside defense held them in check in the first as the Gaels took a 29-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. A 5:25 UCR scoreless drought late in the first allowed Saint Mary's to go on a 9-2 run to close out the period.
The Highlanders bench got into the action in the first 20 minutes of play in the form of Delonte Taylor and Tyquan Brown as they scored five and four points respectively to keep UC Riverside in the game.
An old fashioned three-pointer by Javon Borum early in the second half cut the Gaels lead to five at 32-27 and put Borum in double figures for the sixth straight contest. Unfortunately, the Highlanders hit another offensive skid which lasted three minutes allowing Saint Mary's to build a 12-point lead, 39-27.
The Gaels, who made just four of 14 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, began to connect at a much higher percentage in the second. They combined to hit six of their first 12 three point attempts over the first ten minutes of play in the second, opening up a 15-point lead at 55-40 with 10:02 to go in regulation.
The UCR offense went cold once again, going without a point for 4:02 as the Gaels to push their lead to 23 at 65-42, and Saint Mary's cruised the rest of the way for the 19-point win.
Borum led the Highlanders with 15 points on the night, while BJ Shearry recorded a career-high five blocks on the defensive end. The Gaels Rob Jones recorded a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double and Matthew Dellavedova added 23.
