Eugene, OR - Four players in double figures guided the UC Riverside women's basketball team to a 74-69 victory at Oregon on Tuesday evening at McArthur Court. The Highlanders improve to 6-2 on the season, their best-ever start in the Division I history of the program.
The 74 points scored by UCR is a season-high, and the most since the team scored 80 at UC Irvine on February 18, 2010.
Rhaya Neabors paced the Highlanders with 17 points while Brittany Waddell and Tre'Shonti Nottingham added 16 apiece, and Alyssa Morris had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
The Highlanders opened the game hitting 5-of-6 of their shots for 83.3%, and turned a 4-2 disadvantage into a 19-6 lead outscoring the Ducks 17-2 over an 8:25 span.
UCR pushed its lead out to its largest margin of the half, 26-10, on a Waddell three-pointer at the 9:43 mark. The Highlanders maintained their double-digit lead until OU closed it to single-digits, 33-24, with a minute and a half to play in the period.
Oregon, who ranks second in the nation in scoring offense at 89.0, were limited to just 24 points in the first half—its lowest first-half total all season.
The Ducks cut the lead to 35-30 less than two minutes into the second half, but the Highlanders responded by scoring eight straight points to take a 43-30 lead capped off by two Nottingham free throws.
Oregon again closed the margin to five points, 50-45 at the 11:45 mark, but UCR pushed the lead back to double digits, 59-47, after a tip in by Morris with 6:14 to go.
UCR led by 10 points with 1:35 remaining, but the Ducks got within four, 69-65, with 0:24 seconds left, and cut the lead further to three, 72-69, with 0:02 seconds left. Nottingham was fouled on the next possession, and for the second time in as many games, hit the clutch free throws to seal the 74-69 victory for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside shot 41.9 percent from the field for the game while Oregon hit 39.7 percent of their shots. Neither team was impressive from the free throw line, however, as UCR hit just 59.1 percent and OU hit 42.9 percent.
The Highlanders outrebounded the Ducks 45 to 39 and scored 32 points in the paint to Oregon's 24.
UC Riverside heads to South Beach to take on the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, December 18 at 2pm PST in Coral Gables, FL.
