The UC Riverside Baseball Team put its undefeated 4-0 record on the line Tuesday evening at San Diego State, but came out on the short end of a 14-1 decision. It was the first win for the Aztecs who opened the season with four straight losses to #22 Oklahoma.
Tony Nix opened the game reaching base on a hit by pitch but was promptly picked off by San Diego State pitcher Stephen Moranda. Moranda went on to retire the next eight Highlanders in order while his Aztecs teammates staked him to a 5-0 lead.
UCR starter Eddie Orozco retired Mitch Blackburn on a pop up to second to start the bottom of the first, but the next six San Diego State batters reached base via a hit by pitch, two walks, a single and two doubles. A one-out sac fly made it 5-0 Aztecs before Orozco was able to work out of the inning. He settled down over the net two frames facing the minimum six batters and striking out three.
The Highlanders finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as Tony Nix singled through the left side, advanced to second on a Brian McConkey ground out and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Robert Brantly.
The Aztecs got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when Blair Moore doubled to open the frame and later came home on a Blackburn sac fly. San DIego State scored two more runs in the fifth and chased Orozco in the bottom of the sixth when they hung three more runs on the board.
Derek Speigner, Ben Doucette and Mike Wolford pitched the final two-and-two-thirds innings for the Highlanders giving up four more runs in the process. Meanwhile the UCR offense was silent picking up just five hits on the day including three off of Brantly's bat.
Next up for UC Riverside is a rather unique four-game series with Loyola Marymount—LMU will host the Highlanders for single games on Friday, February 26 and Sunday, February 28, while UCR will host the Lions in a noon double header at the Riverside Sports Complex on Saturday, February 27.
