UC Riverside at UC Davis Game Notes
There are two games left in the 2009-10 regular season and the Highlanders magic number for clinching a spot in the Big West Tournament is two—any combination of two UCR wins and two UC Irvine losses puts the Highlanders in the postseason. Next up for UCR is a Sunday matinee at UC Davis. Tip time is 1 pm PT, and fans who are unable to make the trip may listen to all the action as The Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call to gohighlanders.com.
UC Riverside appears to be peaking at the right time to make a run in Anaheim as they have won four of their last five games with the lone loss coming in a double overtime affair against Cal Poly. The Anteaters host Cal State Northridge on Saturday evening.
The Aggies beat UC Riverside, 60-50, back on January 30 at the Student Recreation Center. Kyle Austin scored 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the field, but made just one of 10 free throws in the loss. The rest of the Highlanders made just nine of 31 field goals. UC Davis was up 48-47 with 3:28 to go, but closed the game on a 13-2 run led by Joe Harden’s six points and Dominic Calegari’s four. Harden led the Aggies with 19 points.
UCD finds itself in fifth place in the conference just a half game back of Long Beach State, pending the outcome of the 49ers Saturday evening game at Pacific.
Austin is also involved in another close race—the race for leading scorer in the Big West. No member of the Highlanders has ever paced the league in scoring, but the junior from Pasadena is currently averaging a league-best 18.3 points per game—0.5 points per game ahead of UC Santa Barbara’s Orlando Johnson.
