UC Davis 66, UC Riverside 43 Box Score
Davis, CA—UC Riverside dug itself a 12-point hole early at UC Davis on Sunday afternoon, and though they cut the lead to one early in the second half, the Aggies pulled away in the second taking a 66-43 win. The loss drops the Highlanders back into ninth place in the Big West as they battle for postseason seeding, a half game back of Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine with just one game to play.
Things started slowly for UCR as the Aggies scored the first nine points of the game. Larry Gurganious finally got the Highlanders on the board with a lay up with 4:25 gone in the first. It took another 6:24 for UCR to score its second bucket—a three-pointer from Jalonni Diggs. That made it 14-5 UC Davis. The next Highlanders points came nearly three minutes later on a shot by Konner Veteto.
That basket seemed to get the UC Riverside offense going as Rudy Meo hit a three-pointer and made the subsequent foul shot with 5:28 to go sparking an 8-0 UCR run. Jesse LoBue's three pointer with 1:49 to go made it a two-point ball game at 20-18, and the Highlanders went into the half trailing by just four, 25-21.
Bryson Hampton nailed a jumper to start the second half and cut the Aggies lead to two once again, and Kyle Austin made it a one-point game, 28-27, with 18:29 to go. That's when the UCR offense went cold and the UC Davis long-range game heated up. UC Davis went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to open up a 14-point lead, and hit 9 of 14 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes of play. The Highlanders were never able to mount a run the rest of the day falling by 23.
UCR's 41 points were the fewest they have scored since Minnesota held them to 38 on December 1, 2007, and the fewest in a conference game since UC Irvine held the Highlanders to 37 on February 15, 2006. Kyle Austin finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds while Mark Payne finished with a game-high 19 for UC Irvine.
The Highlanders have the week off before finishing their 2009-10 regular season at Long Beach State on Friday, March 5. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 pm PT.
