UC Riverside 10, San Diego State 4 Box Score
UC Riverside used a nine-run third inning to exact a little bit of revenge on the San Diego State Aztecs in a 10-4 win at the Riverside Sports Complex Tuesday evening. San Diego State beat the Highlanders earlier in the season 14-1 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Highlanders sent 14 men to the plate in the third erasing a 1-0 Aztecs lead by pounding out eight including two homers and two triples while taking advantage of two Aztecs errors in the frame.
Bran McConkey led off the inning with a solo shot to right field tying the game at one. Bryan Horst followed with a sharp single up the middle off of San Diego State pitcher Craig Rasmussen. Michael Hur singled through the right side to put runners at first and second, and Robert Brantly's grounder to second, which should have resulted in at least one out, was misplayed by Jordan Van Hoosier scoring Horst and moving Hur to third.
After Dan Pellegrino lined out to third for the first out of the inning, San Diego State Head Coach Tony Gwynn went to the bullpen bringing in Shawn Sanford to replace starter Craig Rasmussen. Tony Nix greeted Sanford with a bunt singles that settled between first and the pitcher's mound scoring Hur. Joey Gonzales drew a walk loading the bases, and Trent Jemmett lifted a fly ball into foul territory down the right field line for what should have been a sac fly. Aztecs rightfielder Josh Chasse dropped it, however, give Jemmet new life at the plate. He promptly singled through the left side of the infield bringing home two Highlanders runs.
Trevor Hairgrove was the next batter, and he homered to left clearing the bases. McConkey, batting for the second time in the inning laced a triple to center, but was thrown out on Horst's subsequent fielders choice grounder. Hur drilled a triple of his own to right field scoring Horst with UC Riverside's ninth and final run of the inning.
That put the game in the hands of the Highlanders pitching staff the rest of the way and starter Trevor Frank (2-0) went five innings scattering eight hits and allowing four runs while striking out seven. Mitch Patito came in and pitched two scoreless frames while Derek Speigner and Mike Wolford each pitched a scoreless inning of their own to nail down the win.
Next up for the Highlanders is a trip to Surprise, Arizona for four games at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Arizona State.
