UCR at Florida International Game Notes (March 5)
Game One of the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Arizona is in the books, with Oregon State picking up a 10-3 win over the Highlanders Thursday afternoon.
Beavers starter Matt Boyd kept UC Riverside off balance most of the day allowing just four hits in six-and-two-thirds innings while striking out seven. The freshman left-hander retired the first 11 Highlanders of the game before Michael Hur broke up the no-hitter and the shutout sending a two-out offering over the left-centerfield fence in the top of the fourth.
Unfortunately Hur's second homer of the season only cut the Oregon State lead to five as the Beavers touched UCR starter Matt Andriese for four runs in the second and two more in the third. Andriese retired the first OSU batter in the second, and then struck out Carter Bell, but the ball got past catcher Robert Brantly for a passed ball.
Jared Norris singled to center on a 2-2 pitch to put runners at first and second, and Parker Berberet drove in the first run of the game with a single to right that moved Norris to third. Andriese plunked Tyler Smith to load the bases, and a wild pitch moved all three runners up 90 feet to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Oregon State made it a 4-0 game one batter later with a play ripped out of the movie Major League. With runners on second and third Keith Jennette laid down a sacrifice bunt which Andriese fielded and threw to first for the second out. Berberet and Smith were running on the play, and both managed to score as the Highlanders left the plate uncovered.
After UC Riverside went in order in the top of the third, Andriese put Stefen Romero on with one out in the bottom of the frame courtesy of his second hit batsman of the day. Boyd, who in addition to starting the game on the mound for the Beavers was serving as the team's DH, took Andriese deep over the right-centerfield fence two pitches later to make it 6-0 Oregon State.
Andriese seemed to settle down after that striking out the last two batters of the inning and recording two more punch outs in a 1-2-3 fourth. In the fifth, he gave up a one-out single to Romero, but retired the next two hitters in order. The Beavers put runners on the corners with two outs in the sixth, but Andriese worked out of that jam as well.
In the top of the seventh, the Highlanders got two more runs back when Dan Pellegrino laced a homer to left after Brantly led off the inning with a hit by pitch.
The Beavers quelled any thoughts of a comeback in their half of the seventh, however, as they scored four runs of their own. All four runs were scored with two outs as Kevin Dickey, who relieved Andriese at the start of the inning, began the frame with a strikeout and a ground out. Boyd then reached on a single to right, Bell singled to right-center moving Boyd to third, and Rob Folsom tripled to make it 8-3 OSU. Berberet followed with a two-run shot to left and the final 10-3 score.
Andriese (1-1) took the loss allowing seven hits and five earned runs in six innings, striking out a career-high seven. Ben Doucette pitched a scoreless eighth for the Highlanders.
Game Two of the Coca-Cola Classic for UCR is Friday against Florida International. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm PT.
