UC Riverside 4, Florida International 3 Box Score
Surprise, AZ—Dustin Emmons allowed just five hits in 7.1 innings Friday afternoon, striking out five as the Highlanders held on for a 4-3 win over Florida International on Day 2 of the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, AZ.
The Golden Panthers struck first as their first two hitters, Pablo Bermudez and Garrett Wittels, reached on singles through the right side of the infield. A double play grounder scored Bermudez, and Emmons was able to work out of the rest of the inning. The junior from La Crescenta, CA settled down after that allowing just two hits over the next six frames.
Meanwhile, the UCR bats came alive in the second and third innings scoring a pair of runs in each. Tony Nix (pictured) got things going in the second with a one-out triple to right center and came plateward on a Mike Nesbitt sac fly. Eddie Young followed with a single to left, and Trevor Hairgrove was plunked by a pitch putting runners at first and second. Brian McConkey brought Young home with a double to right center before FIU starter Scott Rembisz got out of the inning.
in the third, Rembisz picked up the first two outs of the innings on fly balls to the outfield, but he walked Justin Shults and hit Nix before Nesbitt's single to right made it 3-1 Highlanders. The Highlanders stole their fourth run of the game on the very next play as Mike Nesbitt was thrown out trying to steal second, but Nix was able to scamper home before the out was recorded.
Neither team generated many scoring opportunities the rest of the way until the Golden Panthers half of the ninth. UC Riverside closer Mike Wolford took the mound and recorded the first two outs of the inning easily enough on a grounder to short and a strikeout. With FIU down to its last out, Junior Arrojo stepped to the plate and laced a single to left. After stealing second, he was able to jog the final 180 feet home as Bermudez hit a home run over the right field fence cutting the lead to 4-3.
Wittels then beat out an infield single to third, but Wolford got Jeremy Patton to lift a fly ball to left for the final out of the game.
The Highlanders face off against host Arizona State on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4 pm PT.
