UC Riverside vs. Utah Valley Game Notes
Surprise, AZ—The second-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils showed Saturday evening why the national polls hold them in such high regard as they banged out 22 hits on their way to a 16-2 win over the Highlanders. UC Riverside plays Utah Valley on Sunday, March 7 for its fourth and final game at the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Arizona. First pitch is slated for 8 am PT.
The Highlanders got on the board first against the Sun Devils as Brian McConkey opened the game with a single to right and Tony Nix brought him around to score on a double down the left field line.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Arizona State began the bottom of the first with a triple and a pair of singles off of UCR starter Matt Larkins, tying the game. Riccio Torrrez hit into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Zack MacPhee to give ASU the lead, and Zach Wilson's single through the left side of the infield two batters later made it 3-1 Sun Devils.
Arizona State tacked on a another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Drew Maggi, and they nearly made it 5-1 when MacPhee tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park homer, but Trevor Hairgrove's relay throw beat him to the plate for the third out of the inning.
The Highlanders went in order in the top of the third, and the Sun Devils effectively put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning. Five of the first six batters reached base making the score 7-1 ASU and chasing Emmons from the game. Donovan Gonzales took over on the mound for UCR, and the second batter he faced hit a grounder to Trent Jemmett at third for what should have been the final out of the inning. His throw was off-target, however, and two more runs scored to give Arizona State a 9-1 lead at the end of three.
UCR got one back in the fourth when Michael Hur opened the top of the inning with a solo shot to left center for his third homer of the year.
Gonzales gave way to Derek Speigner with one out in the bottom of the fourth, and Speigner recorded the last two outs holding the Sun Devils scoreless for the first time on the evening.
Arizona State starter Jimmy Patterson continued to hold the Highlanders at bay throwing six innings, allowing just six hits and striking out three. The Sun Devils went to their bullpen in the seventh, and Alex Blackford picked up where Patterson left off allowing just one hit in three innings of relief.
Meanwhile, ASU scored one run each in the fifth and sixth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth to take a 16-2 lead. The Highlanders went in order in the ninth on the way to their largest margin of defeat since a 16-1 loss to No. 3 ranked UC Irvine on April 17, 2009
